The Snow Day (Part Two): Snow!

"Katherine!" I cry, jumping out of my seat and ushering her into the apartment. "You're dripping wet with melted snow. Oh honey, you must be so cold!"

"Well, of course I am," she says, looking up at me matter-of-factly. "I played in every single womp of snow on the way home from school. I even walked on my knees part of the time and now I'm freezing! I thought I was going to get frostbite. I carried that tragedy in my mind the whole time I was walking, that's how cold I was, but --- oh wow, it was fun! What have you guys been doing? Poor Penny, have you been stuck inside all day watching movies?"

Penelope doesn't respond. She just looks up from her burrow on the couch, shrugs her shoulders and smiles sweetly. I'm going to have to remember that smile though. I'm going to have to file it away, record it in my Lexicon of Penny, because I'm pretty sure that smile means...

Hardly.

    1. We're lucky to have that park right across the street. Isn't it fantastic?

  2. Such beautiful words to describe such joy on your little girl's face! I remember those days of my children coming in so wet but so happy of playing in the snow!

  3. Penny is just the cutest thing ever! What a pretty smile she has. And that "cat" is the most adorable snowman I've ever seen! Thanks for sharing your snow day with us! xo

    1. Aw, thanks! She was SO excited! But did you notice how her snow pants only came down to her knees? They were like capris! We got them for her a year ago though. I can't believe how much she's grown!

    2. LOL! No, I hadn't noticed! I thought her snowpants were inside her boots. Too cute! How quickly they grow...

    1. Isn't he great? I think one of the guys from the fire station made him. Penelope thought he was hilarious though. She was even a little shy to stand next to him for a picture! :)

  5. What great pictures! And Katherine has taught me a new word...womp. I'm going to try to use that-- as well as the phrase "carried that tragedy in my mind"-- in a sentence this week. Your little girl is an inspiration. :)

    1. Trying to incorporate Katherine's words and phrases into sentences is one of my favorite games. She's definitely something!

  6. Heh! Oh, yes -- you HAVE to remember that sneaky-Penny smile or she might *might* pull a fast one on you some day. Surely not, though...right?

    What a beautiful snowy day!

(And...carried that tragedy?...Katherine is so full of imaginative drama!)

    1. Sadly, I think tricking me might be one of Penny's great joys in life. She's a sneak! (And a silly! And a sweetheart!) And yeah, I'm definitely going to remember that smile. :)

  7. I love this snaps. She is a beauty. I lived in Japan for six months. My daughter and I went to the zoo almost every weekend, she was in love with the Pandas. I was in Tokyo.

    1. Thanks, Brenda! I haven't taken the girls to the zoo in Tokyo yet. It's a couple of hours away from us by train, but once the weather gets better it's one of the places I definitely want to go. Maybe this spring!

  9. The snow kitty is awesome. I love taking my son to the park when it snows. It makes the slides extra slippery...plus there is no dog poop there. When it snows, those poops are like land mines ;)

    1. Ack! I guess that's one reason to be grateful they don't allow dogs at our park.

      What an image!

  10. Oh my, what could be more precious than a three year old playing in the snow, or a six year old having so much fun despite the potential tragedy of frostbite? Of course, I think everything they do is precious :-)

Tell the girls I'm into the stitching phase of their dresses!

    1. Aw, thanks!

It's definitely a real Snow Cat, but we didn't build him. He was hanging out by gate when we got to the park, welcoming people. I have no idea how he got there, but I will say this: the snow sculptures are usually pretty amazing in Japan!

    1. Remember when we used to sink to our knees in the snow in Maine? Those were the days!

This was better though. This snow lasted just long enough to be exciting and melted before it got dreary.

    1. Thanks! We didn't actually build him, but snow cats are definitely cool!

  16. Your snow kitten is very cute. I will have to publish our snow-mexican-american... full with a sombrero that the boys abuelo gave them. It is quite humorous.

And... the Lexicon of Penny... I love that! I have many memories tucked away under my heart files and each boy has their name on one of those files.

    1. When Kat was a preschooler we used to joke that she talked like a character straight out of classic British children's fiction. She'd come running over, saying things like, "I plucked this flower for you, Mummy!" and "Oh, it's bothersome the way those bees are buzzing!"

I don't know if I talk that way or if we just read to her a lot, but either way she's a nut! :)
