On Joy and Fear and Flying

"You know," I tell myself, "I never see small birds flying."

I'm squinting into the sun, watching a hawk circle and drop with my head thrown back and my hands behind me, and my thoughts are winding. "I see them hopping through the grass sometimes, pecking at seeds, and every so often I'll see a group of them startle, but I never have to shade my eyes to watch them rising. They never seem to stretch out their wings."

Her voice cuts through my thoughts. "Mommy," she cries, "look at me! I'm flying!"

Overhead, the sunlight flashes; the hawk is diving, but I turn around and look behind me.

Katherine is circling on her bike, pumping her legs up and down, faster and faster, weaving between all the concrete blocks in the parking lot, with the wind in her face and her helmet shining.

"Do you see me, Mommy? I'm flying!"

"Yes, yes," I cry, "I'm watching!"

She skids to a stop at the curb where I'm standing.

"Remember this summer when I was too scared to go fast?"

"Yes," I say, nodding.

"But did you just see how fast I was going?"

"You were really flying!"

"Oh Mommy, that was so much fun! I'm going to remember this moment --- forever!"

She laughs, and her laughter is high and clear. I smile at the sound. Then she pushes her foot off the curb and pedals out into sun, going faster again, and faster, and I tilt my head back up toward the sky.

I notice the hawk is rising.

  1. It is so amazing when they learn how do so something like ride a bike and become so proud that they learned how to do it.

    1. Oh, I know! Katherine figured out the *mechanics* of riding a bike over the summer, but she's always been really hesitant about it. I think this was the first time she really felt the thrill, you know? She was so happy and eager and proud of herself; it was wonderful!

  2. Sometimes we DO remember those small moments of joy forever. Even if she doesn't, I think YOU will. :-)

    1. Definitely! I loved that she said she was going to remember it forever. We carry so much of our childhood with us, so many little scenes of happiness or sadness, and I often wonder which moments MY kids will carry into adulthood. I don't know how to articulate it exactly, but I felt like she was letting me in on a Shaping Moment...or something.

  6. Oh, I love this! It is so exciting to see your child have that wonderful moment of achievement and moving ahead. Quite like a growing up milestone. I am so happy you had that moment to cherish! Hugs!

    1. It definitely felt like a milestone, even though she's been riding her bike for months. This was the first time she relaxed though, trusted her capabilities, and felt the *joy* of riding; the best kind of milestone, really.

  10. Is it terrible that Mia doesn't have a bike yet? WE just have such a steep hill for a driveway, and our road seems too steep, too -- but really those are just excuses. I want her to fly, too! For now, she's scootering all over the place, but having one foot on the ground will never feel as free as riding a bike.

Okay, now I'm convinced. We need to go bike shopping.

I'm glad you got to BE there for the exact moment your little bird found her wings :)

    1. Seriously? How has Justin let this happen? :)

Our neighborhood is full of hills and we live near the middlish-bottom of a steep one, which is why it's taken me so long to get Katherine out riding. (Well, that and it's a pain to take the bikes down the elevator. They live in my laundry room.) Anyway, I finally found this parking lot that's tucked away and flat (and across the street from our building) and I think that's why Katherine's relaxing.

--- Oh, but Sarah! Yesterday we saw one of her classmates out riding and he was doing tricks...like a stunt bicyclist or something. He was standing up on his seat and, I mean, basically breakdancing on the handlebars while zooming circles around Katherine. He was out by himself, too! No supervision whatsoever! And I suddenly wondered if I've been holding Katherine back. Not that I want her to be a crazy trick biker, but still...

If Mia gets a bike, make sure you send pictures!

I overheard her talking to some of her friends the other day and she was so funny. She was saying, "I got my bike in THE STATES, you guys...in Oklahoma City." And they were all wide-eyed and amazed because, you know, Oklahoma City is AMAZING. Then one of the little boys said, "Well, I've been to the States, too. I went to San Diego, where it's always snowing" and all the kids nodded wisely at each other. They're so eager experts on the USA. It's cute!

  17. Small birds fly when you're not paying attention. Big birds make it a point to get your attention.

    1. Good point. Not to mention, given how aggressive some of these birds are, the little ones are probably afraid they're going to get eaten!

  18. I love this...the little bird who spread her wings! As usual, your imagery is heart-stopping in its simplicity-- a hawk rising as a little girl rides away, smiling. Your quest is to keep time...you are!
