A Family of Bad Dreams

Chris:

I dreamed there was a machine; it had to keep making things, had to keep moving. If I stopped moving my legs though, I knew the machine would stop, but the machine couldn't stop. The machine had to keep moving. Then I realized I was the machine.

Emily:

I dreamed there was a saber-toothed tiger, all stretched out and golden. He stepped onto my bed from above, sneaking in through a picture on the wall, or maybe a wooden carving. His teeth were hooked and jagged, but I knew I had to get past him. He was heading for my children.

Katherine:

I dreamed I was on a water slide. People with spikes on their hands were standing on either side of me trying to tickle me. Their spikes kept cutting. At the bottom of the slide, the pond was full of snapping turtles.

Penelope:

I dreamed about bothery shadows: that one was a hawk; that one was a monster. I told them to leave, but they wouldn't listen.

What have you been dreaming about lately? (Do you believe dreams have meaning?)

**This post was inspired by a bad night and an interesting blogger.

  1. I believe if Justin ever remembered his dreams (he almost never does) he would almost certainly have a dream eerily similar to Chris's. The weight of the world seems equal to the weight of a family.

Yes, I think dreams have meaning! I'm kind of (seriously) a believer in some dreams being prescient. Weird. I'll stop talking now ;)

I hope you guys have a bright, shiny day to chase away all of those nasty dreams!

    1. Wait! You stopped writing this comment way too early.

Do you really believe dreams can be prescient? I want details! Examples! I think that's fascinating, Sarah.

  2. Also, I think YOUR dream proves just exactly how you feel about the prospect of your children being parented by a tiger mother ;)

    1. Ha! I *have* been feeling unusually anxious about all the spelling and math tests Katherine's been having lately. I keep reminding myself it's more important to teach her good habits (a regular routine of homework and study) than it is to keep her up until all hours of the night drilling and drilling...like I sometimes want to.

Maybe I *am* warding off my inner tiger mother; I like that interpretation! :)

  3. I have had a few weird dreams lately as well but I don't remember enough to describe them! I hope everyone in your family has sweet dreams tonight!

    1. Thanks, Audrey! Yesterday it was freezing outside, we were all cooped up, Chris came down the the flu, etc., etc., so I'm blaming that for our bad night. Today though, the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and the girls exhausted themselves bike riding. I'm hoping for a good night!

And I'm hoping for a good night for your family, too! (We miss you!)

  4. I was a Psychology major in college, so I believe that our dreams do have meaning. A recent dream I had was rather mundane. However, what I DO remember about it was that I received a gentle kiss from the late Farrah Fawcett. A friend of mine actually met her and I undertand that she was a magnificent person. I awoke feeling quite surprised. That's all.

    1. Was she the late Farrah Fawcett in the dream, too? That WOULD be surprising!

    1. Oh! I have that dream sometimes too! Isn't it awful? I always wake up feeling glad I'm not an actress on stage. Can you imagine the pressure? (Oh wait, yes, you can...obviously :))

  7. Wow now these are some crazy dreams! I've had some pretty crazy ones myself right now b/c I am pregnant. Some very random ones!

    1. Pregnancy dreams are the best (worst?), aren't they? So disjointed and random!

  8. I actually have very vivid dreams...because I take medications...and they are so weird. THey're like mini stories. Sometimes I get mad when I wake up before they're done.
But my 3 year old has been talking about his dreams lately. One day he told me that him and Papa were driving in a rusty car that his uncle broke. So they drove home and Papa spanked his uncle. Weird.

    1. Oh no, that takes it to a whole new level! If you wake up too early it's like you're missing out on the end of a great book...and you'll never get to find out what happened. That's terrible!

I love hearing about my kids' dreams though. Their dreams are so imaginative and strange; it's fun to get a glimpse into what they're thinking!

  9. I actually kept a dream notebook in high school where I would write them down so I could remember them. Most of my dreams were disjointed and just plain weird. I do think that dreams have a meaning, sometimes they are processing the information that we can't take when we are conscious. A few months ago, I had a nightmare that my best friend was dying of a brain tumor (one of those wake up crying nightmares), but in real life it was a different friend that was dying. It wasn't a healing dream, but it was my brain trying to accept it.

I also had a dream that I was Jesus once... yep, I don't get that one. :)

    1. Keeping a dream journal sounds interesting, but I think I spend a lot of my dream life working through everyday routines and problem, just processing the mundane. My journal might be boring!

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, Krista. Thinking of you ---

  10. I've had some weird dreams... in one the people had been altered by some experiment and their skin was clear and sticky. You could see their muscle and fat, their internal organs but they could walk and move around. I think dreams mean something sometimes-- but sometimes they are a reflection of daily life.

  11. I dreamed my daughter had fallen down a well inside our home. I kept yelling and yelling her name with an unbearable pain inside of me. Then she said "Mom, stop yelling, I'm right here!"

    1. Oh no! I hate dreams where our kids are threatened. I'm glad she was there in the end though. What a relief!

  12. Sometimes dreams are just dreams, but other times they reflect things you are worried about other times they can foreshadow things. Before I had Addy, a bunch of my relatives dreamed I was having a girl this time.

    1. I love the idea that dreams can foreshadow real events and show us true things about other people; it's so mysterious and exciting!

  14. Sometimes I have stage manager dreams! But I've always had vivid dreams that I've been able to remember, and many recurring dreams (or recurring settings in the dreams) and I've taken to going to an online dream dictionary as soon as I wake up.

    1. Stage manager dreams sound especially stressful!

I have a recurring dream where I'm in high school and I'm about to take finals, but just when I think I'm finished I realize I enrolled myself in a course at the beginning of the semester and then forgot all about it. I've never attended any of the classes, but I have to pass the final or I know I won't graduate for some reason. The dream usually ends with me wandering through the halls, still searching for the classroom while the bell is ringing, and willing myself to spontaneously learn a year's worth of information. (Anxiety much, Em?)

You should send me the link to the dream dictionary. That sounds fun! (And I'd like to see what it says about snapping turtles.)

  15. Those exam dreams used to be my most recurring ones - where the examiner would take away my paper too early, before I finished answering all of it. Then, going late. Not having half my clothes and stuck somewhere. Floating around and watching things, quite like time-travel. I used to often dream I was dead and feel very sad for all those grieving. It is funny how one can travel, just like teleportation in dreams. My worst ones used to be going with Vidur somewhere and getting separated :D Another type of dream i have is where I am with a set of people I don't know in real life. The weird thing is....these dreams continue - so it is as though I know them via my dreams.

I believe dreams have a meaning. Bad dreams make you so tired the next morning. I remember reading something somewhere about the significance of certain types of dreams...must find the book.

I hope Chris recovers soon and that you have nothing but sweet dreams! Or even no dreams at all.

    1. Those exam dreams are awful, aren't they? It's amazing how long we carry that fear of being unprepared.

I like the idea of having a set of dream-friends you carry with you though. That's lovely!

  17. My dreams are gruesome and unmentionable. I sincerely hope that they don't hold meaning; even though a couple have become reality. It scares me more than anyone could ever know. Which is usually just keep them to myself. Do you keep a dream journal?

    1. That's terrible! I don't keep a dream journal (do you?) but I think it would be interesting. I wonder if charting bad dreams could help lessen their intensity. I just don't like to think about you being plagued by such scary dreams!

    2. I do keep a dream journal. :) I use it for fuel for my poetry. Charting bad dreams (in my case) does nothing for lessening their intensity, but often revisiting them I feel that I'm conquering inner fears. Does that make sense? I also keep a regular journal, but lately it has just been filled with letters to Anthony and Dominic for when they get older. Weird? Maybe.

    3. I've always really admired you because you seem to have such a rich, creative life. I wonder if some of that comes from the fact that you're so connected to your thoughts and dreams (even though they're bad). Nightmares are raw and powerful and, even though I hate to think of you living through them night after night, they sound like a great source of inspiration.

You bring so much art to your life, Alita. You're so open. It's beautiful.
