I cocked my head to the side. "Here," I asked. "You mean, right here," I crinkled my eyes and looked at him, "on this platform?"
"You have no idea, Em."
I laughed. "You didn't get out much while you were on deployment, did you?"
"No, that's what I've been trying to tell you. My office smelled like jet fuel, and bilge water, and I hardly ever left. We didn't go outside that often."
"That's awful."
"Yeah, but right now," Chris inhaled again, deeply, "right now it smells like crisp, night air and fall leaves and rain; it's amazing."
"I think your senses are heightened, honey. It smells like a train station."
"Maybe, but it's good to be home. That's all I'm saying."
He smiled down at me and I smiled up at him. Then I lifted up on tiptoe and kissed him.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Haha! He's been so deprived, poor thing. Certainly a train station would smell better than jet fuel and bilge water! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad Chris is home . Happy Thangiving!
ReplyDeleteThis post is wonderful! I'm glad you wrote it down. It captures a moment of perfect gratitude so beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Chris is breathing fresh air again, and I'm grateful to him for the hours when he didn't. We take so many precious moments for granted, but we couldn't do that without Chris and all our other protectors and their families. That breath of fresh air represents so many sacrifices that it just boggles my mind. Give that guy a hug and tell him I said thank you!
---I adore your writing....

ReplyDelete*sigh* What a lovely post!
ReplyDeleteI remember when my husband came home from sea. Everything he had smelled like jet fuel and bilge water. He had to scrub down a few times...it seeped into his skin!
However, it was GREAT having him home! There is NOTHING like these times!
Thinking of you and your posts have been pure poetry and brought so many sweet memories to the surface. Thank you.
