Quick Takes

1. Blog-wise, I'm still catching up after our week of sightseeing with Uncle Brian and Aunt Siobhan, which is fine because in real life our pace has sort of slackened since we said goodbye--even though we did check the mail.

2. Laugh if you will, but around here checking the mail is serious business. Since the Navy won't deliver anything to our house, all our mail goes directly to Chris's office. We used to have an actual mail box (kind of like a PO box with a key) in a little room next to the hangar, but now they've reallocated that space and we've been left with nothing. One of the guys in Chris's squadron picks up the mail everyday and passes it out at work--which isn't ideal if you're vacationing at home and avoiding the office at all costs. So anyway, we finally checked the mail and found...packages!

3. There was a spectacular homeade mermaid costume from Grandma Janie...
4. ..and a pretty handmade necklace from Francesca's shop on Etsy.

5. There was even a book called Wild Flowers of the Mediterranean waiting just for me (another 'thank you Grandma Janie!') and I couldn't be more delighted. I spent all last night studying the names of flowers and I arrived at one very important conclusion: we should really rename some of these flowers. Seriously. Imagine a beautiful bush covered with delicate sky-blue blossoms; it's the lovely, graceful...Cape Leadwort? Really?

6. Sadly, nothing came in the mail for Chris or Penelope this week. Chris maintained a stoic silence on the matter and I think Penelope was still too tired to care. Somehow I don't mind it when Penelope is tired. Although I can't imagine why...

7.  Hopefully by next week we'll be back in the swing of homeschooling and Halloween planning, but for the next few days we're planning to stick close to home and rest up from our adventures. We have nothing more pressing planned than a trip to the market in Caltagirone. Happy weekend, everyone!

  1. 3. The mermaid costume looks more beautiful with the mermaid in it! I'm so glad it didn't completely swallow her and that she's got plenty of growing room.

    4. I've fallen in love with Francesca's necklace. It makes me want to run out and get some felt and beads.

    5. Yeah, can you imagine ... "The bride carried a bouquet of Cape Leadwort."

    6. Okay, my heart is pierced. I'm imagining that the sad little look on Penelope's face is because she didn't get a mermaid costume, too, and she's wearing Katherine's old Cinderella nightgown as a consolation. I'm sewing a costume for Penelope as fast as I can! Tell Chris to look in the Surprise Box.

  2. Oh man, I would have loved a mermaid costume like that as a little girl!!!

Poor Penelope... Those cheeks need to be squished and kissed! :)

  3. The costume is darling, and that photo of your daugther sucking her thumb is precious. It reminds me of my daugther when she was that age!

  4. Oh my goodness that photo of P snuggling with her warm little cheeks squished up against you...so adorable. I feel like *I'm* hugging her. My LJ is in naptime, or I'd go snuggle her right now. Seriously, that picture is giving me *feelings*.

And I'll be showing Mia the mermaid picture. She'll be super impressed.

  6. That is the most amazing costume I've ever seen. I can't wait to see what Grandma Janie is making for Penelope!
PS Glad the package made it

  8. A Cape Leadwort by any other name ... OK it could definitely have a better name. :)

And what a great costume!! I hope all the sea captains and sharks out there are ready for some adventures.

Also, has P ever considered competitive snuggling? I imagine with talent like that and a bit of training, she could definitely be the world's greatest.
